Movie Description

Prince of Persia: Sands of Time is a Disney movie based on the popular Prince of Persia video game series. It is the story of a prince who teams up with a rival princess to combat an evil ruler unleashing destruction on the world. The prince employs impressive combat and acrobatic skills throughout the adventure. The prince also acquires limited control over time and can travel in time to a certain extent.

The prince is initially tricked by the evil ruler to unleash the Sands of Time which has devastating effects on the world. The prince and the princess intend to use an artifact called the Dagger of Time in order to restore the Sands of Time to the Hourglass in which it belongs. This is a very interesting story line with plenty of action and special effects. Prince of Persia: Sands of Time is an excellent choice for a movie the whole family will enjoy.

What set Harryhausen apart from others in the SFX field was not only his highly evocative and rich use of stop motion, but the level of high fantasy adventure he infused in all his feature films. His best works were always set in exotic, ancient locales, and as much detail was paid to the costuming and action choreography as were the visual effects. Yes, the dialogue and some situations could get a tad corny, but they were more products of their time and the market they were targeted at, youngsters.

Some of those youngsters who had to have grown up on Harryhausen’s films had to include Bruckheimer, Newell and game designer Jordan Mechner. As any family with a video console will tell you, Mechner earned his stripes in the gaming world with the creation of the Prince of Persia video game. Not only did the game provide its players with their share of turbo-charged action, but it was set in an exotic backdrop that would have made Harryhausen smile with pleasure.

Now throw in Newell, who directed such films as Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and a number of Young Indiana Jones films. Finish this trio off with super producer Bruckheimer, who has proven his flare for financing top box office hits like all the Pirates of the Caribbean movies and you have an incredible combination of talent at the top.

Storyboard:

Orphan boy Dastan, adopted by the King of Persia, grows to become a favored son until he is framed for the ruler’s death. Going on the run with a captured princess, he attempts to reverse events with the help of a magical dagger that can turn back time itself, in this translation of the popular video game.

Not being much of a gaming player, I’m not really familiar of the original video game that the Prince Of Persia property was based upon, and so didn’t have any experience with the source for which to make a true comparison. However, the Sands Of Time subtitle obviously suggested the folks at Disney, and its co-producer Jerry Bruckheimer, were hoping that this would be the first in a new franchise that could supersede their previously phenomenally popular Pirates Of The Caribbean series.

Apart from that high-sea faring trilogy – soon to be joined by an inevitable fourth film – the Disney/Bruckheimer partnership has been seeing some rocky waves of late, with the animation/live-action combo G-Force receiving a collective shrug by the audience, and both Prince Of Persia and The Sorcerer’s Apprentice underperforming this summer at the box office. I don’t think that releasing two similarly aiming films within weeks of each other helped either film’s chances, but Disney’s marketing seems to be out of sorts of late, following the departure of long time Mickey-mouska-marketeer Dick Cook.
